Translation of a letter written by the mayor of Końskie, Poland, following World War II (see image below).

Końskie, 24 Jul 1945

No. Ew.St.C./45

To the County Office in Końskie.

[subject:] Restoration of the legal status in the keeping of civil status records and the administration of denominational cemeteries.

In connection with the letter of the County Office dated 30 Mar 1945, No. W.1/3/45, received by this office as a copy on the 17th of this month, I hereby report that:

  1. The duties of a civil status officer for non-Christian denominations, resulting from the provisions of Art. 92 of the Civil Code, are to be performed by the administrators of those denominations, because:
    1. there are no persons of non-Christian denominations (except for the Mosaic faith [Jews]) in the city;
    2. in the city of Końskie there is currently no synagogue district, and therefore there is no rabbi (Art. 93 of the Civil Code).
  2. In the city there are currently about 40 persons of the Mosaic faith (Jews), however they do not yet have a legally established religious community;
  3. The occupiers completely destroyed the Jewish burial cemetery located in the city, removing from the site not only the fencing but even all the gravestones.

Supervision over the cemetery grounds has been entrusted to Citizen [Ob. = Obywatel] Icchok Minc, a representative of the Jewish population in Końskie.

Acting Mayor
